WMEA OFFICE IN NEW LOCATION!

The WMEA office has now moved and is “open for business.” You can reach us as described below. US Mail should be sent to the street address listed, though the Edmonds PO Box will be kept for a time, and the phone lines are all working.

We’ll still be unpacking, moving furniture and in general adjusting to the new space, but we are once again answering the phones, checking our mail and transacting business.

Our summer hours are somewhat sporadic, between vacations, holidays and in general a slow time. But come the fall we’ll be available to you on a regular basis.

Here’s how to reach us (and feel welcome to drop by–especially later in the summer!):

CHANGES MADE TO WMEA ALL-STATE GROUPS

At the June 13 WMEA board meeting, a few important changes were made dealing with the 2010 WMEA All-State groups. We want our member educators to be aware of the following changes for next year.

  •  JUNIOR ALL-STATE MOVES TO CONFERENCE WEEKEND IN YAKIMA: As a pilot project, Junior All-State will become a part of the WMEA Yakima Conference and take place on Saturday, February 13. Additionally, the WMEA board has decided to pilot the addition of seventh graders to the Junior All-State groups.

  •  AUDITION FEES FOR ALL LEVELS:  There will now be an audition fee for all levels, with an increase in the high school audition cost.

  •  COST OF PARTICIPATION RISES FOR HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STATE:  The cost of participation in Youth Honor Chorus and Junior All-State will remain at $100. However, the cost for high school All-State will be $350 this year.

Follow the link for further details.

2010 ALL-STATE AUDITION MATERIALS NOW AVAILABLE

Give these materials for your students now to give them time to prepare for auditions in the fall.

Official application packets and instructions will be available on or around September 1.

STATE SOLO/ENSEMBLE CONTEST

The 2009 Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest is now completed.

WMEA PARTICIPATING IN MUSIC MATTERS LICENSE PROJECT

MusicAid Northwest, a nonprofit organization formed to support music education statewide, is going to approach the Washington State Legislature this session and ask that a special license plate be designed to be sold, with all profits retuning to music education programs in the schools of Washington.

MusicAid Northwest is sponsoring fundraisers to pay the required fee needed before special plates can be issued. They also need 3,500 signatures indicating an interest in purchasing these plates ($35/set/year).

As these funds will revert to support music programs of WMEA members statewide, WMEA is asking members and friends to acquire one or more signatures on the attached form and sending those pages to MusicAid Northwest as instructed on the form.

The first deadline was February 1. But you don’t have to stop then. Send in what you have by that date, but keep gathering signatures and sending them in every week until the Legislature is adjourned or until we post a notice “Mission Accomplished.”

You can download this pdf and print as many copies as needed. Thank you.

Long-range master calendar of WMEA events

The Washington Music Educators Association provides and promotes educational resources for music educators and students in our public and private schools and colleges. Opportunities for teachers to improve their skills exist through the biennial conferences, periodic in-service sessions and publications.

Students are showcased at 22 regional solo and ensemble contests and at our State Solo and Ensemble Contest, by participation in our sixteen WMEA All-State performing groups, in clinics and workshops at our conferences and at a variety of statewide in-service sessions.

WMEA believes a good music education is a critical component of a basic education for all students.

MENC
WMEA is a state affiliate of MENC - The National Association for Music Education.  MENC is celebrating its centennial in 2007.
