Job Description
Position Title: High School Band Teacher

Essential Teacher Duties and Responsibilities:

*Instruct, direct, and manage the overall instrumental music program for Lynden High School including concert band, ensembles, soloists, pep band, and jazz band.
*Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
*Develop and implement plans for a vibrant and inclusive instrumental music program.
*Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of different students’ learning styles and needs.
*Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal methods.
*Establish and enforce participation requirements.
*Obtain and use evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to determine program effectiveness.
*Recommend policies to improve program.
*Manage budget and initiate purchases based on program needs.
*Maintain inventory of all assets within department
*Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.
*Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with school, district, and state expectations.
*Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with all members of the school community including students, parents, and school staff.
*Collaborate with music instructors across the district.
*Maintain appropriate certification, licenses, and training hours as required
*Comply with applicable district, state, local, and federal laws, rule, and regulations
*Adheres to all standards established by Teachers Standards and Practices Commissions for Competent and Ethical Educator
*Other duties assigned as needed

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for “Additional Extra Duty Stipend(s)”:

*Provide for band participation at identified extracurricular events, including concerts, sporting events, assemblies, parades, competitions, and other local, regional, and national activities.
*Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
*Accompany and supervise students on trips.
*Serve as liaison between the school and other interest groups such as boosters.
*Work with school and district leadership to identify specific events and needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

*Works well with others from diverse backgrounds
*Looks for ways to develop a positive team environment
*Demonstrated ability to successfully work with adolescent students and the public in a school setting.
*Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a variety of audiences.
*Proficient in music theory, reading music, and musical performance conducting.
*Proficient in the use of technology, including, but not limited to: MS Office programs, database software, cloud-based systems, and email.


*Knowledge of performance skills on all wind and percussion instruments as well as best practices in instrumental instruction.
*Knowledge of performance skills in vocal music as well as best practices in vocal instruction.
*Thorough knowledge of musical styles.
*Ability to do basic fundamental maintenance on all standard wind and percussion instruments
*Knowledge of audio recording equipment, sound reinforcement equipment, and other specific music performance-related technology
*Must hold an undergraduate degree in music and valid Washington Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement.
*Licenses as determined by the District including a valid Washington Driver License and ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card
*Experience advising high school clubs/co-curricular activities
