The Mercer Island School District (MISD) announces a 1.0 band position at Islander Middle School (IMS) and Mercer Island High School (MIHS), in Mercer Island, Washington. The position is .8 band at Islander Middle School, and .2 float between IMS and Mercer Island High School depending on student need. Our district is comprised of 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school. The MISD Band Program is team-taught at all levels 5-12. IMS has an enrollment of 1,141 students grades 6-8, with 306 in band. There is a strong student leadership component to the IMS band, with an annual coat drive, interaction with high school students, and student-run chamber ensembles. The most central guiding philosophies around this program are inclusivity and community. All program design grows from these beliefs.

We value a fun, collaborative environment. Our directors regularly spend time outside of class as friends, and genuinely enjoy working with one another. There is very strong administrative support, an enthusiastic and insightful booster group, extensive volunteer system, visiting artist program, professional coaching on all instruments, and community support. The MISD band is truly “The Pride of the Island.”

The Mercer Island High School Band is comprised of 4 leveled concert bands, 3 jazz ensembles, jazz combos, percussion ensemble, and numerous chamber ensembles. Student leadership is a hallmark of our program at MIHS, with an active Band Student Advisory council, section leaders, an annual food drive, and a partnership with Puerto Rico’s Banda Escolar de Guayanilla.

Our ideal candidate is a student-focused educator, experienced in beginning and middle-level band pedagogy, and possessing strong collaborative and visioning skills. We are looking for a passionate teammate, who works to create an inclusive environment where students will flourish. Our district team teaching model includes travel for most band directors to facilitate strong relationships with students, and deploy staff in a way that best meets student needs. This position has a strong emphasis on woodwind pedagogy, and the development and maintenance of chamber ensembles.

If the idea of team teaching and extensive collaboration with like-minded colleagues is exciting to you, we hope you will consider applying!
