Track 5 (from the Scherzo movement of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream):
- The tempo marking in the audition materials (dotted quarter = 84 bpm) is the target tempo (the ideal tempo for the movement is 88 bpm.) The String Resources document lists the tempo much slower (dotted quarter = 64 bpm.) Auditioners are reminded that, per the High School Application Packet, Page 12: “Audition Guidance for Teachers”:
- A steady recording at a slower tempo is always preferred to one with an inconsistent tempo that may at times be up to the indicated tempo.
- Auditions will not be penalized for being played slower than the marked tempo of dotted quarter = 84.
High School Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion: Flute
Track 2: Etude – Joachim Andersen, 24 Etudes for Flute, Op. 15, No. 24
- Measure 9: The C above the staff (on the downbeat of 4) should be a C NATURAL, not a C#.
High School Voice: All Voice Parts
Track 5: Chorale 55
- The incorrect accompaniment tracks were set in Opus for the “Perform” trials (the “test” accompaniments were correct; only the “Perform” accompaniments were incorrect.) These have been replaced with the correct accompaniments.
- If you had students who recorded Track 5 before 9/11/24 at 7:00 pm PDT, please contact studentevents@wmea.org to have their 2 “for real” trials reset. Once those are reset, students may record new tracks.
High School Vocal Jazz
Track 5: Jazz Interpretation
The instructions state:
- “Sing the first 16 measures in a swing style, unaccompanied, of ‘Summertime.’ You choose the tempo and key. (Lead sheet is available on Aebersold, Volume 25.)”
- We received feedback that teachers would appreciate a lead sheet included in the packet.
This has now been added as a separate document to the materials list.

- The lead sheet is written in A minor. You may continue to choose a different key and tempo.
- The lead sheet includes two sets of chords. These are provided for practice only;
audition recordings should be unaccompanied. - The point of this track is to demonstrate the singer’s interpretive ability. Artistic license is expected. The lead sheet is for reference only.
