Delwen was with the Tacoma Public Schools for 43 years, teaching band, orchestra and chorus. He retired in 1974 as the district director of music education. He also was director of a Shrine band for 37 years, and played trumpet for Shrine and Elks Club stage bands. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music Education degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1985.
