Wendal spent thirty-six years in higher education: at Olympic College from 1957 to 1960, the University of Arizona from 1961 to 1967, and at Eastern Washington University 1967-94. He was awarded the Trustees Medal at EWU. He also enjoyed playing as principal bassoonist for the Spokane Symphony Orchestra from 1969 to 1994.
