In 1993, Mike was named the Washington Interscholastic Activities Executive Director. Previously, he was Commissioner Wyoming High School Association Commissioner and the Montana High School Association Executive Secretary Assistant. He taught high school English and officiated college football and basketball. He holds a BA degree in English from Eastern Montana College, an MA in English from the U of Montana, and completed administrative course work at Montana State U. He attended the Bread Loaf School of English, Middlebury College, on a Rockefeller Grant. He is on the Board of Directors, National Federation of State High School Association, and has served on many NFHS committees, including as chair for the Track & Field Rules Committee.
A member of Seattle 4 Rotary, Mike served as Community Service Committee chair and on the Board of Directors. He also serves on the Seattle Sports Commission Board of Directors. He lives in Bellevue with his wife Jan, and is the proud father of daughters Erin and Jennifer, and grandsons Tannen and Aiden.
